07.09.12 Belarusian militiamen participated in a special operation in Germany
Belarusian law enforcement officers participated in the convoy of a train with nuclear waste Castor in Germany in November 2010. At that time, three Belarusian militiamen took part in the training in Saxony. Saxon policemen offered them to convoy a train with the nuclear waste, which was transported in special Castor containers from France to the Lower Saxony city of Gorleben.
This was confirmed by the Ministry of the Interior of Lower Saxony, as the German news paper Die Zeit reports.
Each year in France and Germany thousands of people take part in “Stop Castor” demonstrations against nuclear waste transportation. Because of that about 20,000 policemen convoy the trains. In 2012 the police had to use water cannon, gas and batons against the protesters, and to saw up the chains, with which the protesters fettered themselves to the railway tracks, and to dismantle barricades. Almost 1,300 protesters were detained.
As Telegraf reported, German Bundestag faction of the opposition Social Democratic Party intended to initiate a hearing on German police cooperation with Belarusian militia in German Parliament's Committee on Internal Affairs.
The German authorities confirmed that they trained Belarusian militia’s and special units’ officers.
The Social Democratic Party considered the explanations of the Minister of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) Hans-Peter Friedrich about the cooperation with Belarusian law enforcement officers to be a whitewash.
On August 29th Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus, while responding to web-publications and German media statements, stated that within the frames of cooperation with Germany there were no practical training in “trapping protesters” and “riot control”.
German cooperation with Belarusian state security authorities and militia came up following the dismissal of the head of German Federal Police Matthias Seeger in July 2012.
